BELFAST — Left Bank Books, 109 Church St., invites the public to meet writer Alice Elliott Dark as she signs copies of her recently released, highly acclaimed novel, “Fellowship Point,” Monday, August 29, from noon to 2 p.m. This is a free event; reservations are not necessary for this “Meet-and-Greet” signing.
“Fellowship Point” is an epic story of the lifelong friendship of two unforgettable women, tracing their shared histories and buried secrets across the arc of the 20th century. Agnes and Polly, both in their 80s, have been friends since childhood. Their devotion to each other is sacrosanct until they begin wrangling with their legacies, including the future of the land where they both have summer homes — the majestic Fellowship Point on the Maine coast.
Part of what makes the novel so special is its old-fashioned set-up and thoroughly modern concerns: feminism, land ownership, careers and family, and environmentalism. As Louisa Ermelino wrote in Publishers Weekly, “‘Fellowship Point” is an immersive, intimate, modern interpretation of a 19th-century novel — a literary page-turner that hits all the salient points of the long-entwined lives of two female friends.”
The pleasures of this novel are myriad — gorgeous sentences and consummate wisdom; fully realized characters that readers will grow to love like friends, thorns and all; the celebration of a complex and nourishing friendship and of the natural world; the exploration of art, legacy, and true love. All of this, and with a twist that will knock you sideways.
Dark is the author of “Think of England” and two collections of short stories, “In the Gloaming” and “Naked to the Waist.” “In the Gloaming” was made into two films — one was directed by Christopher Reeve and starred Glenn Close, Bridget Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, The New York Times, Best American Short Stories, and O. Henry: Prize Stories, among others. She is a past recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Dark is an associate professor at Rutgers-Newark in the MFA Program. “Fellowship Point” is her first book in 20 years.
