The All Blacks are “back from the dead” after claiming “sweet revenge” on the Springboks and easing the huge pressure on “beleaguered” coach Ian Foster.
That’s how the world media have seen Sunday’s (NZ time) 35-23 Rugby Championship win in Johannesburg.
Just a week on from the 26-10 defeat in Mbombela and staring down a fourth loss on the trot, the men in black pulled off a gutsy upset at Ellis Park to defy all their critics.
And here’s how overseas scribes summed up the stunning turnaround in fortunes:
Mike Greenaway – IOL
Appalling selections by the Springboks coaching staff came back to haunt their team when the desperate All Blacks came back from the dead of their loss in Nelspruit the week before.
The inability of the South Africans to win primary possession was key to their downfall and much of that failure was due to the coaching staff failing to pick Malcolm Marx to start the game, while the recall of Duane Vermeulen was a failure.
The ‘Ellis Park factor’ that was so debated going into this match ultimately favoured an All Blacks team that so often have dined out on the Highveld factor because it favours their running game, and once more that was the case.
The Springboks knew a backlash was coming from the ailing All Blacks after the mauling in Mbombela yet they could not deal with it in a first half that belonged to the fiery visitors.

New Zealand have stopped the bleeding.
After three successive losses, the All Blacks finally returned to winning ways in front of more than 61,000 fans at Ellis Park.
They came into this match with coach Ian Forster under tremendous pressure but they responded with a solid performance that denied the Boks an opportunity to register back-to-back wins over their rivals.
It was a performance where New Zealand’s senior players Jordie Barrett, Ardie Savea, Aaron Smith, Sam Cane, Sam Whitelock and Richie Mo’ounga turned up to relieve pressure on their beleaguered coach.

Lukhanyo Am’s heroics, playing in an unfamiliar role at right wing, weren’t enough to extricate the Springboks out of a fire of their own making in their defeat to the All Blacks at Ellis Park.
The Boks arrived fashionably late to the occasion that was supposed to be their coronation as the superior nation of the two age-old rivals.
However, they have themselves to blame for the Rugby Championship reverse after making a myriad of first-half mistakes that allowed the All Blacks to gain in belief.
A game with more twists than the Spaghetti Interchange turned again when the All Blacks broke from their own 22m area to put a scathing move that led to David Havili’s try, their third six minutes from time.
That score sucked the life out of Jacques Nienaber’s men as the All Blacks went for the throat, putting the result beyond doubt with a fourth try through Scott Barrett at the death.
Stuart Barnes – The Times
The All Blacks started this game well; they finished it brilliantly. From the first to last blast of Luke Pearce’s whistle, this was something like the old All Blacks.
In recent first halves New Zealand have produced a sorry sequence of performances. Short on possession and territory in recent weeks, it was the Kiwis who kept the opposition to nil for the initial half-hour.
Playing for pride and positions in the team, this was a different New Zealand side to the one overwhelmed in just about every collision last week.
Not the same New Zealand and nothing like the same Springboks. The efficiency of their game was gone.
Now they must prove this was more than a one-off. By beating the Springboks, Cane and co bought their head coach breathing space in what was a classic game of rugby.
Simon Thomas – Wales Online
New Zealand claimed sweet revenge for last week’s defeat to the Springboks by winning a pulsating clash in Johannesburg.
It looked as though they were heading for their fourth successive test defeat when they went behind in the final quarter, having earlier led 15-0 and 21-13. But two late tries earned them the spoils in front of 62,000 fans at Ellis Park to ease the pressure on coach Ian Foster.
The All Blacks enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half and were much more potent with ball-in-hand than in Nelspruit last week, bringing both directness and a clinical edge.
Despite being down to 14 men, the Kiwis went back in front with a try from centre David Havili with six minutes to go and then sealed their victory when lock Scott Barrett touched down in the final play.
