BOSTON – Candidate for Attorney General Quentin Palfrey again today called for a full investigation into the mismanagement that has led to consistent failures of the MBTA to protect rider safety, and provide equitable access to public transit.
This is following last night’s breakdown of a Green Line train that resulted in 300 passengers walking through tunnels between stations.
“When a tunnel collapsed during the big dig and killed a driver, the Attorney General investigated,” said Palfrey. “With Green Line trains stopping mid-tunnel, and the Orange Line bursting into flames, the AG must uncover how we got to this point with the MBTA.”
This echoes Palfrey’s consistent calls over the course of his campaign for changes to how the MBTA is funded, managed, and held accountable for its obligation to riders. This includes his pledge at the recent Attorney General debate hosted by WBUR to investigate the Baker Administration for violating the civil rights of some of Boston’s most vulnerable communities following an Orange Line train catching on fire, and the subsequent suspension of the line.
“We must have an independent look into how we got where we are today.” said Palfrey. “Rider safety is at risk, huge amounts of money are at stake, and there are civil rights implications in who is harmed. As Attorney General I’ll partner with the Inspector General and Auditor to hold our public transit to the standard the people of Massachusetts deserve.”
Palfrey is a former Assistant Attorney General and was the first chief of the office’s healthcare division. He also served in senior roles in both the Obama and Biden Administrations, and is the founder of the Voter Protection Corps, an organization that works to combat voter suppression.
In the race for AG, Palfrey is the endorsed candidate of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, several of Massachusetts leading progressive and environmental advocacy organizations, and over 300 grassroots endorsers from communities in every county in the Commonwealth.
