PETALING JAYA: Newly crowned Commonwealth Games women’s doubles champions Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah were the big winners as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) rolled out their incentives totalling RM245,000 for the national shuttlers yesterday.
Pearly-Thinaah, who maintained Malaysia’s grip in the women’s doubles by winning the event for the country for the fifth time in the last six editions of the Games, shared a total of RM50,000.
Malaysia’s mixed team success was also aptly rewarded as 14 members (four coaches and 10 shuttlers) received RM140,000 for the exploits in Birmingham.
Ng Tze Yong’s silver medal effort in Birmingham fetched him RM10,000 although the player had to skip the function at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) as he was not well.
Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and independent mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing were also among the recipients. Each pair received RM7,500 for their efforts.
SEA Games mixed doubles winners Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei also received a windfall as they received RM30,000 for ending Malaysia’s 23-year-wait for gold in the event in Hanoi in May.
Chew Choon Eng-Chor Hooi Yee were the last Malaysian pair to win the mixed doubles at the 1999 Brunei SEA Games.
The incentives were handed out after BAM’s second council meeting at the ABM.
“BAM acknowledge the hard work and sacrifice of the national players. The Commonwealth Games bodes well as we gear up for the remainder of the year,” said BAM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria.
“In Birmingham, I’m pleased to see the national team, comprising a healthy mix of experience and youth, manage to reclaim the mixed team gold.
“Debutants Pearly-Thinaah are only our fifth women’s doubles gold medallists in the Commonwealth Games while Tang Jie-Yen Wei picked up their biggest win in Hanoi.”
Norza urged the shuttlers not to rest on their laurels and keep striving for more success, with the World Championships in Tokyo from Aug 21-28 their next major assignment.
