Mazars South Africa co-CEO, Anoop Ninan is not an auditor. This is a bit odd because he now runs an auditing company.
Though he started his career as an auditor at PwC in the later 1990s, he found it was not for him and moved on from this job, to what he was really drawn to, which was business development.
This aptitude was obviously to his father, a charted account who wondered out loud to him whether accounting “might be too boring” for him.
This preference eventually saw him move on to EY in 2001, where he got into corporate finance, valuations of companies, mergers and acquisitions.
While at EY, he came across a group of people who would have a profound impact on him: entrepreneurs.
These were people who had built up sizeable businesses from the ground up and who were now selling those to large corporations.
A lightbulb moment
Ninan then had a euphony.
“I realised this is the type of market I wanted to be involved in. I wanted to serve entrepreneurs.”
The realisation was so profound (along with the realisation that he was just a cog in in a large corporation) led him to leave EY, even though he was three months away from becoming a partner.
He instead decided to work for a smaller accounting firm, Moores Rowland in 2006, which was focused on smaller, owner-managed businesses.
The idea was to advise these business owners on how to take their businesses to the next level, so they could either be listed on the JSE, taken over by a rival company or sold off to a private equity firm.
It was a good time to join the firm, as it was during the period when many medium size businesses were looking to be bought out. At the time, Moores Rowland was one of the few firms that could offer due diligences that could undercut the big four accounting firms.
For his part, Ninan was involved with several listings on the JSE, like that of construction group, Stefanutti Stocks.
The listings trend of that period had a knock-on effect in Moores Rowland then becoming the auditor for several listed companies.
In 2008 Moores Rowland become part of the Mazars, a move that would have a big impact on Ninan’s career because in 2012, he was elected as a managing partner at Mazars’ Johannesburg’s office.
A new job
When Mazars decided to create the positions of Co-CEOs in 2018, Ninan knew it was a job he wanted to have.
The way he saw it, he was drawn to the group because of its people, its values and its potential, and becoming a Co-CEO in 2018.
Though Ninan is not an auditor, he is a big defender of the profession, despite several high-profile controversies, like the fraud at Steinhoff International that have cast it in a bad light.
He points out that though the auditors have to take some responsibility, they are not solely responsible. The management of a company, for example, are responsible for day to day operations.
There is also a company’s board and its various committees that have oversight.
Ninan does say auditors are changing. Before they would just verify that a transaction took place, but now they are willing to say if it was a good or bad contract.
