VINCENT, Ala. (WBRC) – The Vincent City Attorney has ruled that the suspended Vincent Police Officers cannot be terminated.
The decision comes after the Vincent City Council approved a resolution to pursue termination of the Chief of Police and Assistant Chief of Police after a text message allegedly sent by the Assistant Chief contained racist rhetoric.
The officers in question are still employees with the Vincent Police Department, but are not on patrol. Mayor James Latimer confirms the two are suspended with pay.
A public forum will be held on Thursday, August 18 where residents can voice their questions and concerns about the possibility of dissolving the police department. The forum will begin at 6 p.m. at the Vincent Middle High School auditorium.
City Councilor Gary Anaker gave an update about the independent investigation into the alleged racist text messages. He said a private investigator was contacted, but said he wouldn’t touch the situation.
He added that the Alabama Ethics Commission was also contacted for potential references. Anaker said the committee refused to give references but said they would accept complaints from the community.
Anaker then made a motion for the council to submit a complaint form to the ethics committee and it passed.
The next regularly scheduled Vincent City Council meeting is August 16 at 6 p.m., but the mayor said the police department would not be discussed. He said residents can voice concerns on Thursday at the public forum.
