Ducati has dominated the MotoGP weekend in Spielberg so far. But the list of contenders is even longer, warned Jack Miller. He also commented on his successor for 2023.
For the fourth time this season, Jack Miller made it into the top 3 in qualifying. In Austin, Le Mans and Silverstone he was on the podium after starting from the front row, but “JackAss” is still waiting for his first victory of the year.
“With the unknown of having a new chicane right after the start, it’s going to be pretty chaotic. It’s definitely better if you drive away from the front. That was the main goal today, »commented the Australian on his third starting place for the Austrian GP. “I thought I had a chance [auf die Pole-Position], but I haven’t been able to put it all together. The other guys were able to improve a bit more, I only found a few thousandths on the second tire.”
“It’s been a good weekend so far,” added Miller. “I was fast in all sessions and in all conditions. In FP4 I planned to use the hard rear tire but Michelin advised against it because of the temperatures. So we stayed on a used medium tire and it was good. There will definitely be a drop, tire wear is a big issue here at the Red Bull Ring.”
Looking ahead to the 28-lap race, the three-time MotoGP winner feels in good shape overall. “I definitely have the feeling that the pace is there,” he confirmed. “But it’s not just the Ducati, it’s also Fabio [Quartararo] is really strong and incredibly fast, plus were Joan [Mir] and Alex [Rins] Well done all weekend, maverick [Viñales] the same – so the list is long and doesn’t just include all the Ducati riders in the grid, who are all extremely fast.”
“I think it’s going to be quite a hectic race, similar to Silverstone,” Miller continued. “The most important thing is to always be there and avoid mistakes. Because a small mistake here, for example if you slightly miss your braking point, can cost you dearly. Throughout FP4 I worked on my pace and I found consistency. We’ll definitely have to find more because all the guys will be working late to try and improve their pace as well.”
Despite the armada from Desmosedici (five in the top 6), the 27-year-old does not consider internal Ducati agreements to be necessary. “There’s a lot of Ducati out there, but at the end of the day it’s an individual sport and everyone rides for themselves. Whether it’s Ducati or any other manufacturer, MotoGP is the ‘premier class’ of motorcycling. I think we all have the respect and we know what we’re doing. Of course there can be accidents from time to time, but I believe that everyone understands and should know what they are doing. »
Jack Miller will say goodbye to the Borgo Panigale manufacturer at the end of the season and join the Red Bull KTM works team. Whether Enea Bastianini or Jorge Martin will succeed him at Ducati Lenovo will soon be decided.
Who would Miller choose? “That’s putting me under pressure now,” he said before explaining: “I think Enea is doing a fantastic job – even last year on the old machine. He came as an underdog and was already on the podium on a two-year-old bike. Now he’s on a last year’s bike and he’s won three races on it. Yes, he has his ups and downs, but this is his second MotoGP season. This is totally normal and applies to both. But if I had to decide now, I would take him,” the Australian referred to Bastianini.
