The Secretariat of Citizen Security, in coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense, arrested José Bernabé Brizuela Meraz, alias “La Vaca” or “La Bestia”leader of Colima Independent Cartelin the vicinity of a hotel located in the Anzures neighborhood, in the town hall Miguel Hidalgo.
The criminal leader was in possession of a firearm and various doses of narcotics when he was arrested.
“La Vaca” is identified as the leader of the “Independent Cartel of Colima” criminal group, the main generator of violence in the state of Colima, due to the conflict it has with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)although it maintains operations in Michoacán and Baja California.

Who is José Bernabé Brizuela Meraz, alias “La Vaca” or “La Bestia”?
He currently has two arrest warrants released by the authorities of the state of Colima for the crime of stockpiling weapons and by the government of the state of Tamaulipas for the crime of homicide.
He has a criminal record for homicide in Baja California, since in his beginnings he belonged to the Los Arellano Félix Cartel (CAF).
In 2010 it was identified as Head of Plaza in Colima for the CJNGand in April 2011, the then Federal Police and the Secretary of the Navy of Mexico arrested him, linking him as the perpetrator of the assassination of the former governor of Colima Silverio Cavazos Ceballos, but soon after he was released.
In May 2013 he was recaptured in Comala, Colima; and in 2016 he was sentenced to 34 years in prison, serving his sentence in the Altiplano maximum security prison, in the State of Mexico, but in December 2019 he was released.

In that same year, the government of Tamaulipas issued an arrest warrant for murder and crimes against public servants, and during his transfer carried out by elements of the State Investigation Agency (AEI) of the state of Oaxaca, an ambush occurred in which collaborators of “Cow” they intercepted the authorities and released him; In addition, during the confrontation, an element of the AEI lost his life.
After said event, a judge from Oaxaca granted him freedom, so in 2020, José Bernabé returned to Colima to join the ranks of the criminal group “Los Mezcales” a split from the CJNGhowever, after a fight in the CERESO of Colima between both groups, they separated and formed the Independent Cartel of Colima.
