Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Sergeant: The best nap partner
With some of the fluffiest ears and one of the cutest smiles to match, Sergeant only has one rule: to give him lots of attention! The handsome 5-year-old Chow Chow and German Shepherd mix is such a ham, he will always let you know when he hasn’t had enough pets by leaning his body into yours for more.
Sergeant was originally surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society in June of this year after his previous owner could no longer care for him. Upon being evaluated in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital, the fuzzy pup was found to have some chipped teeth that needed to be removed. After his dental surgery, Sergeant spent some time in a loving Foster Hero home to continue healing while receiving lots of love and care.
While with AHS, it has been found that Sergeant can be a little bit shy at first but truly does enjoy getting pets and cuddling up in his human’s lap most of the day. Although he loves his two-legged friends, this doggo prefers to be the only canine in the home as he wants all of the attention to himself. Wiggly, cuddly and smart, Sergeant loves to show off his brainiac ways with the tricks he knows and proves to be a pure gentleman while taking treats.
How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like sweet Sergeant, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.

Roxie: Looking for a new home
You may have noticed Razzle featured recently — this is Roxie, her equally beautiful sister. These six-year-olds were returned to Sun Cities 4 Paws when there was a death in their family home, where they had lived all of their lives.
Roxie is very friendly and especially loves chin rubs. She is okay with being picked up and brushed, and she will let you know when enough is enough! A bit of hissing goes on when around other cats, but it may be a case of becoming acquainted.
Although the two girls don’t seem to be inseparable, it would be wonderful if they could find a new home together, but it is not a requirement.
How to adopt: Please visit them at 11129 Michigan Avenue, Youngtown. Adoptions are Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; call 623-876-8778 after 10 a.m. Other adoption locations are 10807 N. 96th Avenue, Peoria, same hours and days. Also visit the Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road, and Lake Pleasant Towne Center PetSmart, 25372 Lake Pleasant Parkway, Peoria.

Eggo: A loving and playful kitten
Whether you are a breakfast connoisseur who enjoys an early meal or you prefer a Cup of Joe to kick start your day, it is likely you will never want to “leggo” of this Eggo! Eggo is an absolutely gorgeous 14-week-old gray tabby who was rescued in June.
Found as a sick, underage orphan, this adorable kitty is just one of thousands of kittens AHS will care for and treat in its Bottle Baby ICU and Kitten Nursery this summer alone. Once she was picked up by an AHS Emergency Animal Medical Technician, Eggo was evaluated in the shelter’s animal trauma hospital. Here it was found that she had calicivirus, a severe upper respiratory infection that causes ulcers and severely affected her eyes.
After a few weeks of treatment, it was found that her eyes unfortunately were not improving and unable to be saved, resulting in the need for surgery. While recovering in a Foster Hero home, Eggo proved to be just as resilient, loving and playful as any kitten with their sight.
A true sweetheart in every sense of the word, she loves to be held and will automatically start purring when you give her some attention. Although she is blind, Eggo is a perfect example of how well pets can adjust even with special needs and that every pet is deserving of a second chance at a great life.
How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like excellent Eggo, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.

P. Hatcher: An affectionate cat
P. Hatcher is a wonderful domestic, short-haired, black and white boy looking for his forever home. He is a friendly and affectionate cat, who is also super cute! He is about seven years old.
P. Hatcher tested positive for FIV but is, otherwise, very healthy. He can go on to live a long, healthy, and happy life. Our adoption consultants can elaborate on what this diagnosis means for P. Hatcher and the family that adopts him.
How to adopt: If you would like to meet P. Hatcher he is living at our adoption center currently. He can’t wait to meet you! P. Hatcher’s adoption fee is $175.
