In the early 1930s, more than 90 years ago, approximately 20 units of the Stutz DV-32 Super Bearcat. It may not ring a bell, but back then it was among the fastest cars money could buy: a supercar in every sense of the word, almost winning Le Mans in 1932.
The Stutz DV-32 Super Bearcat was sold in very limited numbers between 1931 and 1933. The impact of World War I affected all car manufacturers at the time, but particularly high-end brands. Stutz then decided to recover the name Bearcat, a car built between 1912 and 1923 and which was undoubtedly its most famous model: manufactured in just 5 weeks, it finished 11th in the Indianapolis 500.
The new Bearcat received a short, very low chassis, with a shortened wheelbase and styling that appears to have been influenced by the Mercedes-Benz SSK. Its engine, an eight-cylinder in-line with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder (DV-32 stands for Dual Valve 32). It was an unusual specification, as most engines still used pushrods and two valves per cylinder. delivered some 153 hp and no less than 407 Nm of torque, hence you should not be surprised that it exceeded 170 km/h maximum speed.
The fastest version of the new Bearcat was this Stutz DV-32 Super Bearcat, equipped with a much shorter (and therefore lighter) chassis and a lower center of gravity body. They typically used aluminum bodies or, like this unit, Weymann bodies. This was a patented system for creating wood and fabric bodies in aircraft and automobiles. The result was greater lightness and quietness, without the screeching noise of metal-bodied cars.
The Super Bearcat ceased to be produced in 1933 and the company succumbed in bankruptcy in 1939. There have been some attempts to revive the brand, the last ones as an electric car firm… with some model that would recover the Bearcat name, of course.
If we have remembered the Stutz Bearcat now, it is because this Stutz DV-32 Super Bearcat unit will be auctioned at the end of the month. It is expected to reach between 1,000,000 and 1,300,000 dollars, being one of two surviving examples with Weymann bodywork (one of eight surviving Super Bearcats in total).
