The Graubünden heptathlete wins her first medal at a major event in Munich with a new Swiss record.
Annik Kälin was responsible for the first Swiss heptathlon medal at a European Championship at the European Championships in Munich. The woman from Graubünden set a new personal best in the final 800 m run and, thanks to this par force performance, secured the bronze medal.
With a total of 6515 points, she also improved her Swiss record, which she set at the World Championships in Eugene. In Oregon, Kälin in 6th place totaled 6464 points.
800 m to tip the scales
The 800 m run is actually not one of Kälin’s great strengths. In the battle for precious metal against her two direct competitors Adrianna Sulek and Noor Vidts, it became apparent that the 22-year-old had to beat her personal best to have a chance of winning precious metal. Kälin, who had taken intermediate place 2 before the final 7th discipline, did this impressively. With a time of 2:13.73, she improved her best time by a good 3.5 seconds.
Poland’s Sulek, who won the 800m, passed Kälin. The Belgian Vidts left the Swiss behind thanks to her coup over the double stadium round. In the end, Kälin was only 17 points behind silver winner Sulek, while the Belgian was 48 points behind her.
Long jump as a door opener
It was thanks to a strong long jump that Kälin was able to dream of a medal in the final 800m run. In the 5th discipline she jumped 6.73 m and thus as far as never before in her career. With the javelin, Kälin fell short of expectations with 46.72 m. Nevertheless, before the final bouquet, she had advanced from 3rd to 2nd intermediate place over the double stadium lap. The Dutch Anouk Vetter, who is considered a strong javelin thrower, did not compete in the 6th discipline.
Kälin laid the basis for the 10th Swiss medal at the current European Championships on Wednesday. With the fastest time of all athletes over the 100 m hurdles, she had made an excellent start to the competition. The Grisons also achieved strong performances in the high jump (1.74 m) and over 200 m (24.14 seconds).
Gold to top favorite Thiam
The gold medal went to top favorite Nafissatou Thiam. The highly decorated Belgian showed an average competition for her standards, especially on the second day. The second European title for the 27-year-old, who is also a two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion, never came under serious threat.
Thiam prevailed with a total of 6628 points. At the World Championships in Eugene, the 27-year-old scored 6947 points.
