Two attacks on Russian military bases in Crimea in the past week have bolstered Ukrainian morale and put Russia under pressure, eight years after Moscow’s humiliating annexation of the peninsula, it was reported on Wednesday (08.17.2022).
The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that an “act of sabotage” led to a series of explosions at an ammunition depot near the town of Dzhankoi, as well as damage to a railway.
The Ukrainian authorities did not claim responsibility for this attack, but the head of the Ukrainian presidency, Andriy Yermak, spoke on Twitter of a “demilitarization action” of the Ukrainian armed forces, using the terminology with which Russia justifies the invasion.
This incident comes just a week after another attack on a Russian airbase in Crimea, described as a “well-prepared special partisan job” by a Ukrainian official who did not want to give his name.
Attacks undermine Russian morale
For analyst Oliver Alexander, these attacks, which he believes may have been carried out with ballistic missiles, are sapping Russian morale and lifting morale on the Ukrainian side.
“Crimea had been a relatively safe place for the last six months, but that’s not the case anymore. This increased the pressure on the Russians,” explains Alexander.
Concern has also grown among Russian tourists visiting this region known for its beaches.
On the other hand, the adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, Mijailo Podoliak, called for the “dismantling” of the Kerch bridge, inaugurated in 2018, and which links Russia with the peninsula to the east. Which increases the fear in Moscow that it will become a legitimate military target.
The Institute for the Study of War in Washington said the target of Tuesday’s attack was a key supply center for Russian troops in southern Ukraine.
They see last week’s attacks as part of “a coherent Ukrainian counteroffensive” cutting off supply lines along the Dnieper River.
Ukraine claims that it captured dozens of towns on the southern front, and that it destroyed strategic points such as bridges.
