For its part, the National Directorate of Firefighters reported that work continues on the site: “Despite the efforts of various fire departments, it has not been possible to stop the spread of the fire, which is advancing through the Punta del Este shopping mall. The country details that the fire started around 4 am on Saturday. According to Firefighters, around 4:00 p.m. it was possible to stop the advance of the fire in the subsoil, stopping the spread to the rest of the mall. However, it later spread again.

Firefighters worked through the night and into the early hours of Sunday, adding crews to the job, and continue to do so this morning. But the fire is still out of control.

The Fire Department statement indicates that the flames also affected some vehicles located underground and a wall collapsed. As for the smoke, it was channeled through the entire basement level to upper floors, so they had to use compressed air cylinders for respiratory protection equipment.
