The elected president, Gustavo Petro, appointed Alfonso Prada as his Minister of the Interiorwho served as his debate chief in the recent presidential contest and who was part of the government of former President Juan Manuel Santos.
The appointment of Prada at the head of the Interior portfolio of the new Government was confirmed by Petro via Twitter. “Alfonso Prada will be the Minister of the Interior. He has been a councilor and representative to the Chamber”, highlighted the president-elect.
After confirming the appointment, Petro pointed out that among the key tasks of his Interior Minister will be the mission of be responsible for relations with the Congress of the Republic and to “trace policies on human rights, citizen participation and land use planning.”
Prada landed in the Petro campaign in April 2022 and assumed the duties of head of debate carrying on his back the experience of having coordinated Santos’ re-election campaign in Bogotá in 2014when he defeated Óscar Iván Zuluaga, then a candidate for the Democratic Center.
In the same year, the newly appointed Minister of the Interior was appointed by Santos as director of the Sena. Then, in 2016, he took a break to work on the ‘Yes’ campaign in the Plebiscite for Peace and later returned to the Seine. In 2017 he was appointed as Secretary General of the Presidency.
In terms of his experience in electoral politics, he stands out his seat as councilman of Bogotáfor the Liberal Party, between 1998 and 2006, and his election in 2010 as a representative to the Chamber for Bogotáfor the Green Alliance party.
After landing in the Petro campaign, Alfonso Prada became one of the key strategists to ensure that the former mayor of Bogotá came to power and showed his willingness to lead the Interior portfolio, making it clear that the ministerial cabinet must have representation from all parties.
Precisely, among its main tasks will be coordinating, together with the other ministers, the legislative agenda of the Government of Petroin which are the ambitious reforms, in the Congress of the Republic and the other entities of the national order.
