Agroecology in Cuba
Havana, Aug 6 (RHC) The project Integrating biodiversity in agricultural and livestock landscapes of relevant ecosystems in eastern Cuba is committed today to the creation of mini-industries focused on four productive lines: cocoa, coffee, coconut and livestock.
The international cooperation initiative will be implemented in six eastern municipalities of the island (Buey Arriba, Bartolomé Masó and Guisa, in Granma; Guamá, in Santiago de Cuba; and Baracoa and Maisí, in Guantánamo), and advocates for sustainable production practices.
Representatives of institutions and social actors from these territories discussed the issue on Thursday and Friday, who highlighted the importance of an agricultural activity that affects the protection of the environment.
Likewise, they agreed on the use of science and innovation to reduce the pressures of agricultural activity on the mountain and pre-mountain ecosystems of eastern Cuba, through the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources and the implementation of the integrated landscape management approach.
The initiative is part of a joint effort by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation for Nature and Man and the Agroforestry Research Institute. (Source:PL)
