The Special Commission for the Election of the Ombudsman defined today’s morning to the final three candidates to preside over this institution. The list will be sent on next monday august 8 to the President of Parliament, Lady Camones, so that the respective vote can be carried out in the full.
These three candidates were defined among the 8 suitable finalists who passed the personal interview stage held last Wednesday. The final selection was based on the number of votes they reached within the parliamentary commission in charge of this task.
Tie between finalists
The 8 finalist candidates reached the following vote: Carlos Castro Barriga, 7 votes; Beatriz Ramírez Huaroto, 5; Jorge Rioja Vallejos, 5; Victor Soto Vallenas, 4; Victor Garcia Toma, 3; Cayo Galindo Sandoval, 2; Miguel Soria Fuerte, 1 and Ricardo Velásquez Ramírez, 0.
Since there was a tie between the candidates Ramírez Huaroto and Rioja Vallejos, a new vote was held between the 9 members of the commission for define the order in which they will be presented for the final election in plenary. This is because the organic law of the Ombudsman establishes that the candidates must be presented in successive order in Congress.
After this vote, the list was defined with Carlos Castro in first place, Jorge Rioja in second Y Beatriz Ramírez in third.
It is worth mentioning that, according to the organic law of the Ombudsman’s Office, if none of the three proposed candidates reaches 87 votes in plenary, the commission must proceed to formulate “successive proposals” in the following ten calendar days until they reach the two thirds of the legal number of congressmen in favor of any candidacy
After this definition, the president of the commission, Manuel García Correa, ended the session.
