DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera says his career — worthy of a place in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame — could come to an end at the end of the current season.
The 39-year-old Venezuelan star for the Detroit Tigers reflected on his retirement Thursday in light of his low hitting during the current hot summer.
Cabrera entered the players’ club with 3,000 hits and 500 career home runs this season and was hitting .308 just on July 8.
Due to numerous leg and lower back problems, which have been a constant problem in recent seasons, the player is hitting .132 with three extra-base hits in his last 20 games.
“You have to understand the body, I understand mine and my place on this team,” Cabrera said before the Tigers’ home game Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
“I have to talk with my agent, the general manager, with everyone to know the plans for the next season.
“Right now, we don’t know. We’re focused on today.”
The Tigers started the season as likely contenders after finishing well in 2021, but they are 42-64 with the worst offense in baseball.
“I go out and do my best every day, in short,” he added. “But there’s an opportunity for young players to get more at-bats and let’s see what’s in store for us next season.”
