Hi there. It’s Monday, July 25, and you’re reading The Loop, a quick wrap-up of today’s news.
Let’s start here
Domenic Perre, who was found guilty of killing a detective and seriously injuring a lawyer in the 1994 National Crime Authority (NCA) bombing, is seeking leave to appeal against his conviction.
Perre was initially a suspect, but charges against him were dropped in September 1994. He was charged again in 2018.
Justice Kevin Nicholson found him guilty of murder and attempted murder last month, but Perre has now lodged an application in the Court of Criminal Appeal to appeal the conviction.
The matter returns to court in August.
What else is going on
- Australia’s COVID-19 cases and death rates were the third highest in the world per capita during the past week — epidemiologist Mike Toole from the Burnet Institute says it’s likely we’re in the worst phase of the pandemic at the moment. Experts are pleading with the public to wear masks, get PCR tests if symptomatic and make sure they’re up-to-date with their COVID vaccines.
- The Titans have sacked former captain Kevin Proctor after he posted a video on social media of himself vaping in the stadium during the club’s match against Canterbury on Sunday. Proctor was not playing in the match but was part of the squad as 19th man, with the video (captioned “not the half-time vape”) believed to be taken within a toilet cubicle inside the Titans’ dressing room.
- Oscar-nominated actor Margot Robbie, Australian icon Delta Goodrem and House actor Jesse Spencer are among the names confirmed to return for the final episode of Neighbours. The program first aired in 1985 and was cancelled earlier this year after Britain’s Channel 5 announced it would drop the Australian soap from its line-up.
