Jonathan Greer says it is “pretty cool” to become the second joint most successful driver in the history of the Northern Ireland Rally Championship after winning the title for a third time at the weekend.
reer dominated Saturday’s Down Rally, recording fastest times on five of the event’s eight stages to take the victory by 26 seconds and, in the process, retain the trophy for a second consecutive season.
A moment on the ante-penultimate test – the 8.69-miles of ‘Bucks Head’ – threatened to spoil the party when Greer kissed a rock, but luckily the front tyre remained inflated and he was able to make the finish.
It means the 33-year-old has drawn level with Mervyn Hill, Kenny McKinstry and Kevin Lynch on a hat-trick of titles, while Derek McGarrity remains the all-time record holder with a total of eight crowns. Greer’s first success came in 2017 before he doubled up last season.
“The first time I won it I spent a long time looking at the trophy and reading through the drivers on there,” said Greer, who used a new car in Citroen Racing’s C3 Rally2 for the 2022 season, and had to rely on the services of three navigators for the five round Championship.
“There are some big names on it and it is great for me to be on it for a third time with the likes of Mervyn, Kenny and Kevin.
“It is great to get my hands on it again and to be in that club with those drivers. To get my name on the trophy once would have been good enough for me, so it’s pretty cool to do it three times.”
Greer was denied a clean sweep of maximum scores en route to writing his name into the history books when he damaged a rear hub on his car at May’s Maiden City Stages Rally after catching a bridge. However, he insists that was not the one thing that partially took the shine off his and the team’s celebrations.
“I don’t stop and think what might have been after what happened on the Maiden City Stages, it was a difficult rally and we had car issues on the day,” he said.
“Not having the same guy in beside me all year, I think that was the only downside because it meant the co-drivers’ title was out of reach for them. However, things still worked out well and Darragh (Mullen), Niall (Burns) and Dai (Roberts) have all done a great job – they definitely made my life much easier out there.”
