A heat warning could not stop Grimsby’s participation in the torch relay.

The torch relay, which is winding its way through all of Niagara’s municipalities, stopped off in Grimsby on July 23.

Beginning at the John Deere location on Hunter Road, the relay went throughout Grimsby before finishing at the Grimsby Peach King Centre.

John Tooke was the first torch bearer, followed by Carol Zhang, Monica Sun Koziejko, Sam Owusu, Paul Nguyen, Heidi Tillmans, Laen Hanson, Sydney Nichols, Robert Clark, and Gillian Mauro.

Prior to the relay there was a pep rally held.

Grimsby Mayor Jeff Jordan said they were happy to be hosting the relay.

Jordan said during the 13 for 13 event part of the games that Grimsby had been paired with Prince Edward Island.

The event will take place at the Peach King Centre on August 20.

He said he was also looking forward to the softball competitions Grimsby would be hosting.

Games board of directors member David Veres said there would be more than 5,000 athletes coming to compete in the region.

The Games will feature 18 sports and take place across 19 venues from Aug. 6 through Aug. 21. 

“That’s including an inaugural rugby 7s competition, the return of lacrosse after a 37-year absence from the Games and the first-ever woman’s lacrosse competition in the history of the Games,” said Veres.

Clark, one of the torchbearers, said he was “looking forward” to being one of the torchbearers.

“I’m really looking forward to this. I am excited,” said Clark.

Tillmans said it was “an honour” to carry the torch.

Born in Grimsby, Tillmans said she works as the national manager of infrastructure and signage for the Trans Canada Trail.

Tillsman said when the torch came from Ottawa it travelled along the trail.

She said she is definitely looking forward to attending the games later this summer.

Gillian Mauro, a wheelchair tennis athlete, said she was “excited to be involved in something of this magnitude.”

Mauro said she wanted to thank everyone, saying “the community support is huge.”

“I am really excited to have this here,” she said.

Tooke, who has participated in the games himself, said “still 27 years later, I remember all the feelings that I had as a participant as an athlete in the Canada Games,” said Tooke.

“I remember walking alongside fellow athletes from our province into the opening ceremonies,” he said, adding “the feeling of camaraderie of walking alongside athletes that you’re participating with that are all representing the province.”

He said he was looking forward to seeing what this year’s games hold, knowing the athletes would “feel that camaraderie, build those friendships and feel the pride of representing their province within these games.”

The Games alternate between summer and winter events every two years and are the highest national competition level for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes with Olympic aspirations.

They were due to be held in Niagara last year, but were delayed by the pandemic. The Winter Games will take place next March in Prince Edward Island.
