SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (18 to 24 July):

Fandi Ahmad joins Pahang as technical adviser

Singapore football great Fandi Ahmad has been named as the technical adviser for Malaysian Super League (MSL) club Sri Pahang, less than a month after he left his head of elite youth role at the Football Association of Singapore upon his contract’s expiry on 30 June.

The 60-year-old had played for the club in 1991 and 1992, winning the Malaysia league and cup double in the second season.

Pahang – who are struggling at 11th place in the 12-team MSL – also announced on their social media platforms that current team manager and Malaysia football great Dollah Salleh, who was Fandi’s teammate at Pahang, will take over Frenchman Christophe Gamel as interim head coach.

Late winner gives Sailors 2-1 win over Tampines in fiery SPL match

A stoppage-time winning goal from defender Pedro Henrique gave Lion City Sailors a precious 2-1 win over Tampines Rovers at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday (24 July), as they maintained their five-point lead atop the Singapore Premier League (SPL).

The Brazilian’s 94th-minute winner ended a two-match winless streak for the defending SPL champions, after Tampines’ Taufik Suparno scored in the 77th minute to cancel out Song Ui-young’s 30th-minute opener. The match was marred by skirmishes after the match, as both teams jostled angrily and Sailors head coach Kim Do-hoon and Tampines’ Syazwan Buhari were yellow-carded.

Second-placed Albirex Niigata (Singapore) had temporarily narrowed the gap to two points with a game in hand on Saturday after a 5-0 rout of bottom-placed Young Lions at Jalan Besar Stadium. Ilhan Fandi (24th minute), Masahiro Sugita (29th), Kodai Tanaka (64th and 73rd) and an own goal by Syahrul Sazali (85th) earn the big win for the Swans.

Tanjong Pagar United maintained their third placing in the league with a 2-0 win over Balestier Khalsa on Saturday, with a brace from Reo Nishiguchi (28th and 78th).

On Friday, Geylang International maintained their recent hot streak with a 2-1 comeback win over Hougang United at Hougang Stadium, with goals from Vincent Bezecourt (77th) and Sime Zuzul (88th) cancelling Pedro Bortoluzo’s opener (34th).
